WHAT: Broward County Parks and Recreation Division's Special Populations Section will offer two separate spring sessions of Take the Stage! Hip Hop Til’ You Drop!, a free dance program for youths, ages 8 to 14, with developmental disabilities. The programs will be held weekly on Saturdays from March 16 – May 18, 2019 (no classes on 3/30, 4/20, & 5/4), from 9:15 to 10:15 a.m. for ages 8-12 and 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. for ages 10-14. Preregistration may be available through the Thursday before the second class on March 21 unless the program is full.
5, 6, 7, 8! Join us in the wonderful world of DANCE!
From hip hop, to jazz, to breakdancing, these sessions offer a variety of dance skills based in diverse forms of contemporary dance and physical fitness. Together, we will groove to the newest hits of today and throwback with some classics. The program operates in a fun, active, and noncompetitive setting while focusing on enhancing coordination, rhythm, socialization, self-awareness, self-expression, and confidence. Participants will be assisted by experienced student dancers, volunteers from St. Thomas Aquinas High School, as they explore the universal language of dance together. Each class will include a warm-up, dance techniques and steps, work with props, rhythm and coordination activities, social circle, cool-down, and more. Participants will be improvising their own moves into a routine that may be performed for family and friends at the end of the program. This is not a drop-in program - consistent attendance is required, as each week participants will build on skills they learned in the prior week's class.

On Tuesday of this week, United Health lost a case dealing with mental health coverage for its denial of claims for mental health benefits. U.S. Chief Magistrate Judge Joseph C. Spero found that United Behavioral Health, the insurer’s unit that administers treatments for mental illness and addiction in private health plans, used overly restrictive guidelines to make its decision on mental health coverage in making decisions for tens of thousands of mental health and substance abuse patients. He stated that United Behavioral Health effectively discriminated against patients with mental health problems to save money. He dismissed portions of the testimony by UnitedHealth’s experts as evasive and deceptive. Judge Spero also found that United Behavioral Health had violated its fiduciary duty under federal law and described the company’s guidelines as “unreasonable and an abuse of discretion” and having been “infected” by financial incentives meant to restrict access to care.
